About
Mythology and language meet in Draegath's paintings. Monsters leer from the canvas and birds sing under the nuturing gaze of Goddesses of bone and cloth. Draegath's art is about storytelling of the oldest order, mixed with a punchy and profound intensity that leaves one breathless.
Born in 1979, Draegath, whose real name is Matt Benson-Parry, lives and works in Fremantle, Western Australia
Since 1998, Draegath, operating under various psuedonyms such as Matte Dubh, Os Coehlo & Dhoe, has been building up his repetoire of influences. His work remains heavily influenced by Basquiat, but he also shows signs of Bisley and Shiele in his work. His work has appeared on album covers, tattoo designs, theatre sets and t-shirts.
He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2006 with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art. There, under the influence of Peter Mudie, Penny Bovell and a meeting with Stellarc, Draegath went bigger and better and his art gathers steam still, along with a loyal group of fans.
